EMPLOYEE
EXPERIENCE

We attract great people who share our values and hire only the best.

At EllisDon, our business mirrors our foundational values: Freedom, Trust, Complete Openness, Mutual Accountability, Entrepreneurial Enthusiasm, Integrity, and Mutual Respect.

Our mission is to create avenues for individuals who share these values to realize their utmost potential, to foster an environment offering enriching careers to our peers, and to make significant contributions to the community we are a part of. We are committed to cultivating a work environment where every person can thrive professionally while supporting one another in reaching their aspirations.

The following five elements are what EllisDon employees experience and how our culture influences each:

INCLUSIVE
DIVERSITY

“As a company, we must continually strive to enhance our diversity. This effort should encompass not only different sectors of work but also diverse employee backgrounds. To become an employer of choice, we need to create environments that are welcoming and safe for people from various backgrounds. Creating an environment that attracts individuals from diverse backgrounds will increase our talent pool and bring different perspectives to our initiatives, entrepreneurial ideas, and strategic growth. Diverse thinking is essential for our company’s success.”

EllisDon’s Commitment

EllisDon is committed to impactful Inclusive Diversity initiatives focused on five pillars: improving employee experience, empowering leadership, strengthening our brand, engaging communities, and advancing the industry.

We regularly evaluate progress in our strategy, prioritizing strong partnerships, effective communication, transparency, cultural inclusivity, comprehensive education, and meaningful systemic change.

EllisDon’s commitment was reinforced through an employee message from Kieran Hawe, President and CEO, who reaffirmed EllisDon’s strategic commitment to Inclusive Diversity in EllisDon’s Business Plan.

Diversity Profile

Using demographic data from the Canadian Census, EllisDon aims to reflect the country's population within its workforce. To track progress on this objective, EllisDon has introduced a confidential Self-Identification Study, which allows employees to voluntarily provide details about their gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability status, and military background.

As of January 2026, we've achieved an 84% response rate from all our full-time salaried staff across Canada, which exceeds our initial target of 75% participation.

  • Partnering with Indigenous Leadership, Community, and Development groups to offer Keys to Employment program to 24 Indigenous participants.

  • Sponsoring tuition for four Indigenous participants in Lather Apprenticeship Level 1 training.

  • Financing two cohorts of Indigenous trainees at Piping Industry College of BC.

HEALTH
AND SAFETY

At EllisDon, health and safety are integral to our culture and present in every aspect of our operations. We firmly believe that safety is non-negotiable and are dedicated to ensuring a safe, healthy, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone, whether on-site, in the office, or anywhere in between. We are committed to delivering a culture of care, driven by three primary goals:

1

To eliminate injuries and ensure that everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.

2

To develop a strong safety culture.

To protect and maintain the health and safety (including physical, psychological, and social well-being) of our people, clients, partners, subcontractors, and communities.

3

We are continuously striving to not only enhance our own safety program, but to elevate safety performance and standards across the industries in which we operate. It is paramount to us to provide an environment that not only supports but empowers all employees to become leaders in health and safety.

EllisDon’s Health and Safety Culture in Action

EllisDon’s organizational leaders are actively steering our safety journey from the top down. Our culture of safety is becoming entrenched in everything we do, with operational staff at all levels enhancing their involvement and demonstrating a steadfast commitment to safety. EllisDon is a driving force in the industry, and we accomplish this by fostering a culture of care and providing employees with the tools to become health and safety leaders at all levels.

Safety as a Shared Responsibility

We believe everyone has a role to play when it comes to safety at EllisDon, that’s why we begin every new employee orientation with a focus on health and safety, highlighting EllisDon’s commitment to safety from the top and sending a clear message that protecting our employees is a priority at every level. Some other positive demonstrations of EllisDon’s shared responsibility to safety include:

  • Beginning all meetings with a ‘safety moment’ conversation.

  • Integrating safety planning throughout the project lifecycle with estimating, scheduling, and construction.

  • Demonstrating visible leadership through management site visits. Senior leaders completed over 6,400 management site visits on more than 400 sites in the last two years.

  • Organizing annual awards for safety leadership and divisional awards for safety performance.

Measuring Performance

EllisDon believes that everyone has a right to go home safely each night to their loved ones, and we continue to capture leading indicator data to provide us with proactive, preventative, and predictive measures that allow us to make informed decisions about improving our safety programs and standards to accomplish this. Some leading indicators include:

  • Reporting and investigation of incidents with the potential for serious injury and fatality.

  • Safety audits performed quarterly on all active projects.

  • Senior leaders completing safety-focused management site visits.

  • Senior Management Team holding incident review meetings and sharing hazard alerts for Serious Injury and Fatality (“SIF”) and Serious Injury and Fatality potential (“SIFp”) incidents.

  • Safety training compliance.

The effort that we have put behind our drive for excellence, and the advancements of health and safety initiatives have made an impact evidenced by excellent performance from our business areas, including 11 areas with zero recordable incidents or that met or exceeded their performance targets in 2025.

The Shift Beyond Total Recordable Injury Rate (“TRIR”)

While recordable injuries are an important metric in measuring safety performance, indicators like SIF and SIFp are what EllisDon has shifted its focus to as a performance metric.

SIF and SIFp incidents are events that have had – or could have had – life-ending, life-threatening, or life-altering results and EllisDon has made it a top priority to focus its efforts on preventing incidents that have the potential for the most serious consequences.

The Future of Health and Safety at EllisDon

EllisDon is always seeking to stay at the cutting edge of health and safety advancements to both enhance our own programs and set a positive example for industry and we take pride in being a company that leads the way.

Collaborating for a Safer Future

EllisDon is a proud member of the Canadian Construction Safety Council (“CCSC”) of General Contractors. Composed of CEOs, COOs, and Senior Safety Leaders, the council’s mission is to be a force for positive change in the construction industry by leveraging the collective knowledge and capacity of the member companies and to work together to improve safety performance. We are an active participant in the CCSC’s current initiatives which include participating in a working group to establish standards for exclusion zones in addition to leading the dropped object prevention working group.

EllisDon is also a proud member company of the Construction Safety Research Alliance (“CSRA”), a community of industry leaders and academic experts who collaborate on safety initiatives and execute scientific research focused on the prevention of SIF incidents. Through participation with the CSRA and research conducted by teams of scientists, we have been able to successfully adopt an approach to SIF reduction using energy-based hazard recognition. EllisDon currently has participants in the Safety Starts with Design and Energy-Based Risk Assessment research teams.

Empowering Safety through Energy-Based Hazard Recognition

Effective hazard recognition is an essential skill for all safety activities, but research shows hazard recognition skills may not be as robust as previously believed. In 2024 EllisDon adopted the use of the Energy Wheel, designed to help improve hazard recognition by triggering the brain to consider the hazards associated with sources of energy that otherwise may not have been noticed.

After the initial launch of the Energy Wheel, we continue to raise awareness and improve adoption to increase hazard recognition. In 2025 we successfully launched an interactive e-learning course for our construction management staff and a training video for our field workforce, showcasing practical examples of energy-based hazards. We continue to work to integrate using the Energy Wheel into our everyday tasks in a seamless approach to help employees do what they are already doing, but better.

Turning Experience into Excellence – Sharing Lessons Learned

EllisDon believes in the power of sharing best practices and lessons learned to advance safety and foster a culture of continuous improvement. In 2025 we launched our Safety Broadcast – an internal webinar series designed to be an informative tool to drive awareness, foster meaningful conversations and share lessons learned from the field. These series are held virtually for all employees to attend and aim to bring together organizational leaders to discuss real incidents occurring on our sites across the company. Presenters explore the causes, lessons learned, and how we can apply the insights identified across all working locations to set the standard for excellence and work towards building a safer future for all.

Empowering Safe Journeys

EllisDon is continually striving to elevate our programs and standards to bridge gaps and ensure the delivery of industry-leading standards and programs. Given the high potential of struck-by and crush point injuries with equipment and vehicles, EllisDon reviewed and updated our Spotter requirements in 2024 to ensure the highest level or person/machine interface safety and provide consistency across all our projects and work locations. Expanding from this, we have now enhanced our driver program to enable us to not only effectively manage our fleet but further protect our drivers and the communities in which we operate through:

  • Improved driver screening

  • Use of telematics and in-vehicle hardware

  • Defensive driver training

Fall Protection Height Requirements

Falls from height remain the top cause of serious injury and death in construction, despite major efforts from the Canadian government and industry over the past five years. To lead positive change, EllisDon, in partnership with the CCSC, lowered its fall protection height requirement to 1.8 metres (6 feet) in 2025. Research and studies have shown this will reduce the potential of a worker sustaining a serious injury or fatality should a fall occur, and we are driving the standardization of fall protection requirements across our industry.

Elevating Subcontractor Safety

Achieving best-in-class status is not just about EllisDon’s excellence, it’s about elevating our subcontractors alongside us. By fostering a culture of care that extends beyond our company and to those we work with, we ensure that every subcontractor in our network is empowered to reach their highest potential, driving collective success and industry leading standards.

In alignment with the CCSC, EllisDon is leading the way to become one of the first companies to mandate the use of Type 2 hard hats with integrated four-point chin straps with our subcontractors, beginning in 2026. The construction industry has the highest number of traumatic brain injuries across all sectors and research shows that Type 2 hard hats, particularly those with integrated retention systems, provide significantly greater protection. These hard hats have been successfully used by EllisDon employees since January 2023 and the decision to expand the requirement to our subcontractor highlights our commitment to continuous improvement and our high standards for safety.

Other ways EllisDon has continued to help our subcontractors grow alongside us include:

  • Revamping our safety prequalification process.

  • Holding subcontractor safety events.

  • Inviting leaders from subcontractors to collaborate with EllisDon on improving the health and safety of all workers.

Prioritizing Psychological Health and Safety

EllisDon remains committed to prioritizing the psychological health and safety of our employees. In 2025, we continued to build on our organizational mental health framework, expanding our internal capacity, deepening our partnerships, and enhancing access to meaningful support across the business.

Strengthening our Strategy

In 2025, we welcomed a new Director of Mental Health to our dedicated Mental Health Team.

In partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (“CAMH”), EllisDon underwent an organizational assessment based on evaluating our organization against the 13 psychosocial factors for psychological health and safety in the workplace. Key strengths identified included organizational culture, recognition and reward, growth and development, and protection of physical safety. Areas of opportunity included psychological protection and psychological and social support. In response, we are enhancing efforts to include leadership training, raising awareness through training and promotional events, and access to resources across both corporate offices and job sites.

Data-Driven Employee Support

Our Mental Health Team continues to provide direct psychological support to employees, receiving 99 calls in 2025. To better understand and respond to employee needs, we are integrating psychological health and safety questions into our annual workplace engagement pulse survey. This data will inform targeted initiatives across business units.

In addition, our team continues to deliver mental health awareness workshops, training over 500 employees in 2025. We also remain focused on increasing awareness and utilization of resources, including our Employee Assistance Program through GreenShield+.

Industry Impact and Community Engagement

EllisDon continues to play an active role in industry-wide mental health initiatives.

  • EllisDon has been selected to chair the Canadian Construction Safety Council’s Mental Health Committee, aimed at leading transformative change across the sector.

  • In addition, our team sits on the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (“IHSA”) suicide prevention committee and has been invited as speakers at events hosted by the Niagara Construction Association, Joint HSE meetings, Subcontractor Summits and Safety Week site sessions.

  • To foster fundraising efforts for mental health in 2025, we:

  • Took part in CAMH’s Sunrise Challenge, Champion on the Crescent (raising money for Youth Mental Health through the Surrey Memorial Hospital programs), Band Jam supporting young people’s mental health;

  • Continued our partnership with the Mental Health Foundation in Edmonton, Alberta; and

  • Sponsored Space for Grief event in November 2025, in conjunction with the Art Gallery of Toronto and OCAD University at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto.

These efforts reflect our commitment to reducing stigma, promoting mental health awareness, and supporting our workforce and industry.

CASE STUDY

Storehouse Community Hub Society

At EllisDon, every project begins with a commitment to supporting the communities where we build. Beyond the physical impact of our work, we actively seek meaningful ways to give back and strengthen local connections.

Our new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre (“SHBCCC”) site in Surrey, BC embodies this commitment through its partnership with the Storehouse Community Hub Society (“SCHS”). Starting out as the Cloverdale Community Kitchen, SCHS has grown into a vital community resource providing hot meals, temporary shelter, clothing, and seasonal support for families, newcomers, low-income seniors, and unhoused individuals.

Our relationship with SCHS began in 2024 through its Christmas Hamper Program, where SHBCCC and project partners (Fraser Health Authority, Houle, Gallagher Brothers, and Action Electric) donated toys, food, and $10,000 in funds. Together, volunteers assembled hampers for 1,000 households, including 300 seniors and 1,200 children and youth.

Inspired by this success, we expanded our collaboration with SCHS, developing a year-round calendar of pre-planned fundraising and volunteer initiatives—a sustained, coordinated approach to community engagement and impact.

  • Here are some of the initiatives we were involved in:

    • Donated $3,000 as a Rest Stop Sponsor for the Coldest Night of the Year walk, supporting local charities including SCHS.

    • Formed EllisDon teams to participate in Coldest Night of the Year, raising an additional $5,316.

    • Hosted a site-wide lunch fundraiser in February to support SCHS’s Mobile Meals Program, with 100% of proceeds directed to the program.

    • Supported the Mobile Meals Program again, raising $1,477 and providing 211 meals to local seniors.

    • Organized six additional fundraising events in February and March, raising a total of $4,705.

    • Sponsored, organized, and participated in lunch and games events in July and November 2025 to support local seniors and low-income community members.

    • Held a site-wide BBQ fundraiser benefiting the Storehouse Food Bank, raising $10,390 through donations and raffle ticket sales. Proceeds helped reduce the food bank’s family waitlist.

    • Supported the inaugural Storehouse Golf Tournament as a sponsor and volunteer partner. EllisDon staff and trade partners sponsored teams and participated in the event.

    • Sponsored and helped secure a partner to supply new socks and underwear for the Temporary Cold Weather Shelter, providing warmth and dignity for unhoused guests through the winter season.

    • Sponsored a community meal, with 13 EllisDon volunteers, including senior management, who prepped, cooked, served, and cleaned up for 74 community guests.

    • Helped relaunch the Storehouse Community Lunch Program, promoting it to EllisDon staff and on-site partners.

    • Continued to use Storehouse for catering training sessions and events, supporting their ability to hire a new chef and part-time assistant. The catering program has since expanded into the local business community, originating with EllisDon’s first partnership event on International Women’s Day, March 2025.

    • Organized donation drives for Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations to support community holiday events.

    • Continued to collect household items, clothing, food, bottles, and gently used toys throughout the year for the Storehouse Free Store.

    • Collected and donated over 300 new socks and underwear sets to the Cold Weather Shelter Program, providing essential warmth and comfort for men and women in need.

Canadian Paralympic Committee Partnership

Since the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, EllisDon has been providing essential operational services to the Canadian Paralympic Committee (“CPC”), a dedicated, non-profit organization that operates across Canada to promote disability inclusion, accessibility, and awareness among all Canadians.

In 2025, we renewed our partnership with the CPC for eight more years, to support Canadian Paralympic athletes and teams from the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Games through to the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games.

Led by our EllisDon Infrastructure Services group, EllisDon has consistently demonstrated the value of our people, technology, and integrated services in our previous contracts with CPC by providing:

  • Facilities Services that ensured a sustainable and inclusive procurement effort, responded swiftly to issues on-site, and minimized disruptions for athletes and staff.

  • Furniture, Equipment and Design services that used design expertise to create inclusive spaces and deliver a detailed inventory and inspection process.

  • Sustainable Building Solutions that provided guidance across facilities energy and water consumption, waste, procurement, and international/in-country transportation services.

Our partnership with the Canadian Paralympic Committee exemplifies how EllisDon’s expertise extends beyond construction to create meaningful social value—supporting accessibility, inclusion, and equity through sport. Together, we are helping build a more inclusive Canada where every athlete, and every community, has the opportunity to thrive.

Building Community
Through Innovation:
ConTech Accelerator

At EllisDon, driving innovation is a form of community building. By bringing together entrepreneurs, technologists, and industry leaders, we help strengthen the ecosystem that advances safer, more sustainable, and efficient construction across Canada and beyond.

In November 2025, EllisDon hosted its third annual ConTech Accelerator, in partnership with Impulse Partners. The Canadian event attracted over 120 applications from around the world, with the top eight finalists invited to present their cutting-edge solutions at EllisDon’s Toronto office.

A panel of judges (drawn from across EllisDon’s full spectrum of services, including construction management, insurance, capital, facility management, and software development) evaluated the finalists on market viability, scalability, and their ability to address key industry challenges such as sustainability, safety, and technology integration.

The four winning teams earned entry into EllisDon’s Strategic Technology Partners Program, gaining access to marketing support, pilot opportunities on live projects, and collaboration with our Digital and Data Engineering division to refine and scale their solutions.

Now in its third year, the ConTech Accelerator continues to receive strong feedback from participants, who highlight EllisDon’s transparent approach, meaningful mentorship, and focus on collaboration and knowledge sharing—hallmarks of a thriving community of innovators.

Affordable Housing

The housing crisis touches every Canadian community. EllisDon created the Community Builders division to turn our development expertise into meaningful social impact and accelerate the delivery of affordable, inclusive, and sustainable housing. By partnering with non-profit organizations, Indigenous communities, and all levels of government, we help housing providers bring projects to life faster and more efficiently—creating homes and communities that thrive.

EllisDon Advances Three Canadian Projects to Construction

In 2025, EllisDon Community Builders brought three Canadian affordable housing developments to construction—an extraordinary milestone amid rising material costs and economic uncertainty. Each project is designed to serve its community in a unique way, thoughtfully addressing the needs of priority groups identified by our partner organizations.

Highlighted below are three projects underway:

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT

835 Gorham Street

Newmarket, Ontario
Blue Door

The 14-unit development at 835 Gorham Street is currently under construction, with EllisDon Community Builders as the development manager. This redevelopment will serve youth, adults, and families needing emergency housing as they transition from homelessness to permanent housing. The construction for this development is expected to be completed by November 2026.

By working with organizations like Victoria Park Community Homes, Veterans House Canada and Blue Door, our model turns housing challenges into real opportunities, building quality, affordable homes that help families and strengthen the community.

Base Design:
Building Smarter, Faster

With Base Design, EllisDon is not just streamlining development – it’s redefining how Canada builds.

Launched in 2025, Base Design is EllisDon’s scalable housing template: an adaptable ‘kit-of-parts’ that accelerates the delivery of affordable homes across Canada. It can be configured for any site, construction method, or budget, helping partners build efficiently and at scale.

By simplifying planning and design, Base Design removes common development barriers, maximizes available incentives, and unlocks the full potential of each site. In a time when housing affordability remains a national concern, Base Design turns complexity into clarity and plans into progress.

The Perfect Partner for Build Canada Homes

In September 2025, the Government of Canada launched Build Canada Homes (“BCH”), a federal agency dedicated to delivering affordable housing at scale. Its focus on innovative financing, standardized design, and modern construction aligns directly with the expertise and tools developed by EllisDon’s Community Builders division.

  • Our Housing as Infrastructure™ model addresses the key barriers to affordable housing (rising costs, interest rate volatility, and lengthy project timelines) by transferring financial and delivery risks to the private sector. This approach enables bundled, regionally distributed developments that protect public equity and accelerate the creation of much-needed homes.

  • Through partnerships with academic institutions and open-access tools (like our free online pro forma that helps users assess project feasibility) we’re equipping housing providers with data-driven insights to plan and build effectively.

As a trusted development partner, EllisDon Community Builders is ready to help Build Canada Homes turn national housing goals into lasting community impact.

QUALITY
MANAGEMENT

As Canada’s largest builder, quality is more than a result – it’s a commitment to improving project outcomes through effective planning, consistent execution, and enhanced technical awareness.

Our goal is to build it right the first time, and quality is all about taking the right steps to get there.

This proactive approach to quality is supported by:

  • A robust set of tools, resources, and processes for understanding the requirements, assessing risk, and developing effective mitigation strategies.

  • A world-class team of quality and technical experts.

  • The application of our collective knowledge, experience, and lessons learned.

At EllisDon, we recognize delivering quality work means more durable infrastructure, efficient and effective use of resources, achieving expected building performance, and minimizing costly and dangerous rework.
