Providing continuous learning opportunities for employees to enhance their understanding of the true history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada is an essential aspect of EllisDon's reconciliation efforts.

This year, EllisDon launched nine educational modules developed by an Indigenous educator, including an interview with Kieran Hawe, President and CEO of EllisDon. Mandatory modules address myths and misconceptions, promote cross-cultural collaboration, clarify appropriate language, and highlight the significance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Six additional modules provide employees with deeper learning opportunities, covering topics such as Indigenous terminology, the history of the land and its peoples prior to Canada’s formation, early contact and exchanges, the legacies of colonialism and residential schools, treaties, and Indigenous rights, self-determination, and UNDRIP.

For the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, EllisDon organized events at every regional office across Canada in collaboration with local Indigenous communities. Activities included traditional Indigenous cuisine, art installations, fundraising initiatives, and presentations by Indigenous leaders on the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund – Legacy Space Partner

EllisDon has entered a multi-year partnership as a Legacy Space Partner with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (“DWF”). This collaboration supports DWF’s education and awareness initiatives and aligns with EllisDon’s goal of giving employees opportunities to learn about the history and contemporary role of Indigenous Peoples. As part of the partnership, EllisDon will dedicate a space within its Executive office for learning, reflection, and discussion on the legacy of residential schools. The Legacy Space provides employees and visitors with resources to engage with reconciliation and deepen their understanding of Indigenous history and culture.

“Inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Our goal is to improve the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education, and connections between all peoples in Canada.” (DWF website
